Overview and History of Discovery

DJara Cave is a rare geological site in the Western Desert of the New Valley Governorate, along the Farafra-Dayrut road towards Asyut. It was first discovered in 1873 by the German explorer Gerhard Rohlfs, during his journey across the desert for his book “Three Months in the Desert.

 

 A local guide pointed him to the cave

 which provided him with refuge during a storm. Writings and interest in the cave dwindled after that. It was later rediscovered and subjected to significant archaeological and geological studies in 1990, followed by extensive research between 1999 and 2002. Enchanting Natural Geological Features The cave consists of carbonate stalagmites and stalactites resembling “frozen waterfalls,” 

 

 

resulting from millions of cubic meters of groundwater that seeped through the desert sands and precipitated due to intense heat.

Flight path!

The tour departs from Cairo at approximately 7:00 AM and arrives in Bahariya Oasis around 12:00 PM. – We will have a delicious Bedouin lunch at our accommodation in Bahariya Oasis before starting the White and Black Desert tour.

We head to visit the volcanic Black Desert. Then we visit a small Bedouin village where you can relax in one of the hot and cold springs in the Bahariya Oasis. Then we head to Crystal Mountain, a series of sparkling quartz crystals. Then we head to the beautiful Wadi Aqaba before sunset. We arrive at the last spectacle of the day, where we set up camp for the night. Enjoy dinner around a campfire. Under the stars, we sip Bedouin tea and enjoy each other’s stories.

We woke up to watch the sunrise at 6:30 a.m. Breakfast would be ready by 8:30 a.m. We then headed to the shores of the lake and drove to Jarra Cave, about 160 kilometers (100 miles) away. We had lunch inside the cave. This cool cave is an ideal escape from the desert heat. Just before sunset, we reached our last view of the day in the sand dunes, where we set up camp for the night.

We woke up to watch the sunrise. Breakfast would be ready at 8:30 a.m. Then we headed to Jebel Khor, 70 kilometers from Wadi Aqaba. It’s an area of stunning sand dunes. You might want to try sandboarding. We then headed to the Magic Spring (Ain al-Saru, as we call it in Arabic), a spring shaded by palm trees with refreshing baths. We then had lunch. Then we moved on to the Old White Desert and the New White Desert. We had time to explore the strange shapes of these wind-eroded chalk stones. Finally, we headed to the camping area to photograph the sunset and have dinner (barbecue). After dinner, we sat under the stars around a fire and fed and played with the fox. We also saw three planets and the Milky Way in the sky.

Wake up to watch the sunrise. Breakfast will be ready at 7:30 a.m., and we’ll have plenty of time to explore the surreal sculptures in the White Desert, shaped by nature over hundreds and thousands of years along the way. Then return to the Bahariya Oasis/and then to Cairo.
