Information about the White Desert and the Black Desert in Egypt

Why is it called the White Desert?

White Desert Egypt

The White Desert is a unique natural wonder on Earth. Wander among strange chalk formations resembling mushrooms, camels, and towers. Camp under a canopy of stars and watch the desert glitter silvery under the moonlight.

Black Desert

The Black Desert is a desert region in Egypt, located 30 kilometers from the Bahariya Oasis and the White Desert in the Western Desert. It is called the Black Desert because its surface is covered with a layer of dark volcanic rocks, stones, and black sand rich in iron, giving it a distinctive black color, especially when compared to the lighter sands of the surrounding areas. Key Facts About the Black Desert: Location: Western Desert, Egypt (between the Bahariya and Farafra Oasis) Appearance: Covered with black volcanic rocks, especially basalt, and iron-rich minerals that form a dark crust over the desert. Geological Origin: The black rocks are the remains of ancient volcanic eruptions dating back millions of years. The erosion and weathering of these volcanoes have scattered the dark rocks over the sand.

Crystal Mountain: Egypt’s Desert Jewel

Location and Overview

Crystal Mountain is not a traditional mountain. It is a picturesque mountain range rich in quartz and calcite. It lies between the Bahariya and Farafra oases in Egypt’s Western Desert, part of the famous White Desert region. It is located approximately 120 kilometers from Farafra and approximately 115 kilometers from Bahariya Oasis.

Geological Wonder

This formation is the result of ancient hydrothermal processes: mineral-rich fluids (rich in sodium sulfides (BaSO₄) and calcium carbonate (CaCO₃)) seeped into cracks in the chalk rocks (the Khoman Formation from the Late Cretaceous). Over time, these fluids cooled, depositing columns, domes, and layers of calcite and barite crystals, made visible by erosion and tectonic uplift. Sparkling Wonder

The crystalline hillside walls shimmer brilliantly in the sun, earning them names like “Jewel of the Desert.” Their translucent surfaces, illuminated at sunrise, make them a photographer’s delight. A natural arch, high enough for hikers to pass beneath, adds to their architectural charm.
